Best Asian Restaurants in Memphis (From an Asian Person)

Asian food in Memphis is nowhere near as good as the stuff you get in California or New York or even Texas. I'm not saying it's horrible...it's just not great.

Thai food is practically non existent with most places masquerading as pan-Asian and the locals here don't really know any better. That being said, the pan-Asian restaurants that do exist can be very good, but do require a little digging around to see what would satisfy the seasoned eater from a bigger city.

The one Indian restaurant I tried (I'll not give their name) was probably the worst Indian food I've tasted in my life with store bought naans and even served hummus (WTF?).

Pro Tip: If you don't see Indian people in an Indian restaurant, you're about to be ripped off with some bland food and naans from Trader Joes.

As an Asian resident of Memphis, I've had the pleasure of exploring the city's diverse food landscape, discovering places that offer a slice of home or a new culinary adventure. In this blog post, I'll share my personal favorites and hidden gems that serve the best Asian food in town.

So what are the best Asian restaurants in Memphis? The best Asian restaurants in Memphis are:

  1. Takashi Bistro

  2. Cafe India

  3. Soi #9

  4. Flame Ramen

  5. Sekisui

  6. Good Fortune

  7. Lotus Thai

  8. Petals of a Peony

Best Asian Restaurants near Downtown Memphis

While they're many decent restaurants all over places like Germantown and Collierville, the reality is most things in this town are pan-Asian and will likely feel the same. They're great in a Panda Express meets Chinese buffet sort of way, and will definitely get you your fix.

However these are my staples after 5 years in the city that I will happily take any out of towner.

Takashi Bistro

A hidden gem that brings the authentic flavors of Japan to Memphis. From sushi to tempura, each dish is a testament to traditional Japanese culinary art.

The first page of their menu is Thai which is more pan-Asian, but all of their entrees and rolls are delicious. I personally like the Dynamite (or Rocket?) Shrimp, the Joe Roll, and and any of the hibachi meals which I think is more value for your buck.

Cafe India

This cozy spot serves up a vibrant array of Indian dishes, rich in spices and flavors. Their butter chicken and naan are must-tries for anyone craving the warmth of Indian hospitality.

On the weekends their buffet has a wait and it's totally worth it. For around $20 you can eat plenty of meat and veggie dishes and you'll know from the crowd you're in the right spot. Try the Indian-Chinese style Chilli Chicken which is like a blend of Kung Pao Chicken with an Indian twist.

Soi #9 in the Hospital

An unexpected location, but Soi #9 delivers authentic Thai street food that transports you straight to the streets of Bangkok. The Pad Thai is a crowd-pleaser.

The restaurant is in the University of Tennessee Health and Sciences center kind of near the Chick-Filet that's also inside. It's only open till 2PM on most weekdays I believe so get there at 12PM for enough time to eat.

Is it the best Thai you'll ever eat? Probably not. Is it good enough for downtown Memphis? Yes sir.

Flame Ramen

Flame Ramen brings the soul-satisfying warmth of Japanese ramen to Memphis with a twist. Their innovative approach to ramen, incorporating local ingredients and flavors, makes each bowl a discovery. The tonkotsu ramen, with its rich, pork-based broth and tender noodles, is a must-try. The lively atmosphere and open kitchen add to the experience, allowing diners to witness the art of ramen making firsthand.

I really like their seafood french fries and of course the Ramen. They have decent vegan and veggie options but the real star is the typical pork Ramen.

A loyal following and a second location in downtown means this place is doing all the right things!

Hyderabad Biryani House

Nestled in the heart of Germantown, Hyderabad Biryani House is a sanctuary for those in search of the perfect biryani.

This humble eatery captures the essence of Hyderabad's royal cuisine, with biryani that's a harmonious blend of fragrant rice, tender meat, and a secret blend of spices. The depth of flavor in each spoonful speaks to the meticulous preparation and slow cooking techniques. The chicken 65, a spicy appetizer, is the perfect start to a meal that's both comforting and exhilarating.

The place aint fancy but if you're craving Biryani, Dosa or anything in between this is your spot.

Sekisui

Sekisui is synonymous with sushi in Memphis, offering an array of traditional and fusion rolls that cater to both purists and adventurers.

Beyond sushi, their menu explores the breadth of Japanese cuisine, from delicate tempura to hearty donburi bowls.

The attention to detail, from the sourcing of fish to the presentation, is evident in every dish. The dragon roll and spicy tuna are personal highlights, showcasing the chef's creativity and respect for flavors.

Good Fortune

This place has yummy Ramen and an Instagram friendly bar, and is the perfect place to take some friends from out of town who are craving ramen. But in true Memphis tradition the real star of the show are there wings! (and the similar Tofu version).

They are just so good!

Seriously come for the ramen but do not miss the chicken wings if you like sweet spicy fried chicken with an Asian twist!

Lotus Thai

I just went there today in Bartlett and can confirm this is one of the better Thai restaurants in Memphis. The food was fresh and actually had some Thai flavors.

Their bad reviews come from people complaining it's too spicy which means this is authentic Thai food!

Petals of a Peony

If you're looking for the closest thing to a Din Tai Fung in Memphis, this is probably your closest bet. While still miles off, it will give you elegant Chinese fix with well prepared dumplings and limited cheap oily American Chinese favorites.

Along with Dim Sum King, this is Probably the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Memphis.

You will have to drive a bit from downtown to Cordova but Chinese people from Los Angeles or San Francisco will feel relieved to eat at a place familiar to the outlets in their home state when they come here.

Conclusion

Each of these restaurants offers a unique window into the diverse and rich culinary traditions of Asia.

Whether you're a long-time resident or just passing through, these spots are sure to provide a memorable dining experience that speaks to the heart of Asian cuisine in Memphis.
